Why Are People So Interested in TV Reality Shows?

Whether it’s reality dating, athletic competitions, talent shows, or a myriad of other genres, these shows have found their way into our lives through broadcast television and streaming platforms. Love them or loathe them, it’s rare to encounter someone who remains indifferent to reality TV. But why is this genre so compelling and addictive to so many viewers?  Once over, it was all about the scandal, but things seem to have moved on. In fact, according to CyberGhost, 22% of people would rather not hear about the scandal linked to reality shows. Let’s see what else there is that draws the viewers in.

    Escapism at Its Finest

After a long and tiring day at work, the simplest answer to why we watch reality TV is that it provides an effortless form of entertainment. It’s a way to switch off and unwind, much like scrolling through social media or watching short videos on TikTok. Reality shows offer pure escapism, allowing viewers to temporarily escape their own lives and immerse themselves in the drama, competition, or the mundane activities of the participants.

    A Glimpse into Different Lives

One of the primary draws of reality television is the opportunity to peek into the lives of others, particularly celebrities and people living lifestyles vastly different from our own. Shows like “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” or “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” provide a legal way to follow the private lives of celebrities. It allows viewers to witness the extravagance and challenges faced by these individuals, creating a sense of fascination and voyeurism. For many, it’s like a more sophisticated version of stalking your favourite celebrities on social media.

Then there are the likes of Married at First Sight, where viewers get to witness complete strangers approach one of the biggest days of their lives. This insight proves to be more than just a little appealing.

    Learning from the Characters

Reality TV presents a diverse array of personality traits, relationship dynamics, and life experiences. Viewers can find characters with whom they can relate, whether it’s someone going through a similar emotional journey or facing relatable challenges. These characters become a source of inspiration for many, as they demonstrate resilience, personal growth, or sheer determination.

Reality TV is also a two-way engagement, especially when watched with friends and family. It becomes an active viewing experience as you discuss the events, personalities, and outcomes with others. This interaction offers insights into the perspectives and beliefs of those around you, fostering valuable discussions and shared experiences.

    Addiction to Drama

Drama is an integral element of reality TV, and it’s one of the driving forces behind its addictive nature. Drama, by its very nature, is emotional, thrilling, and engaging. It stimulates physiological arousal, raising our heart rate, and induces visceral arousal, which triggers the release of endorphins in the brain, providing pleasure and pain relief. This effect is akin to the experience of various drug addictions, making reality TV a potent source of emotional stimulation.

Some researchers even suggest that reality TV’s allure can be akin to the concept of schadenfreude, where viewers are drawn to the drama because it makes their own lives appear less chaotic in comparison. Watching others face challenges and adversities can offer a sense of catharsis and relief, allowing viewers to find meaning in the dramatic stories they witness.
