Northern Virginia-based artist Zahra Sanie has been taking her real-life experiences to write songs that stay close to her heart. Based on an easy-going relationship with a roommate, Zahra wrote “Haley (Snow Jays)” to express how much they had in common and how quickly they became best friends.
The song transpired from a random snowy day in March, where they were smoking and watching Netflix to pass the time. The “Snow Jays” will continue to reflect their inside joke of this day spent together. “I was so thrown off by how similar we were – to the point where we didn’t have a lot to talk about because we agreed on everything. She moved in and we’ve been best friends ever since,” Zahra said.
Songwriting comes easy to Zahra, who writes melodies on her phone based on what ever’s happening in her life. “This happens a lot while I’m driving!” she says jokingly. “It never takes me more than like 30 minutes to complete a song; it really flows once I sit down with it – especially if I’m in the studio with Jesse (manager and producer).”
In the music video, Zahra is sitting underneath a fort made of bedsheets while flipping through the channels on the television. Scenes flash back and forth from the fort to her singing in front of the screen to dolls and toys narrating their story. Their laid-back, chill vibe highlights their close bond. When the lyrics “but she came to me/in my dreams” plays, the doll representing Haley shows up from the top of the screen and begins their roommate to best friend timeline.
The catchy hook “I can see the snow jays dancing ’round the curtains/ thinking at a slow pace/ I remember those days/ Haley’s got the snow jays/And we’re smoking snow jays” will be stuck in your head way after you listen to the single. If you enjoyed “Haley (Snow Jays),” this is definitely goign to prepare you for what’s to come!
