‘Material‘ is the fifth official single to be released off Ward Thomas’ massive 2016 record breaking number 1 album ‘Cartwheels‘, following ‘Carry You Home‘, ‘Guilty Flowers‘, ‘Cartwheels‘, and ‘Boomerang‘, all of which were A-Listed on BBC Radio 2.
‘Material’ has a different feel to the rest of the ‘Cartwheels’ LP with very reflective lyrics and an almost soft-rock melody. The track was written by the twins after Lizzy returned from a charity work trip to Africa. The song is about learning to live in the moment and talk to those around you rather than living in a materiel world.
Both Catherine and Lizzy were not sure that fans would like the track but it has become a firm favourite amongst their listeners and was the obvious choice for the next official single release. Their vocal harmonies are as beautiful as ever and their vocals both sound sublime separately.
It is one of the standout songs on the LP and really shows another side to the country duo and allows them to prove that they can play with a variety of genres while still keeping strong roots to the country music genre.
RATING: 5/5.
