12th August marks #3YearsOfApplause for Lady Gaga

Today marks three years since Lady Gaga released her lead single from ‘Artpop,’ (her third studio album) which was titled ‘Applause.’ She said the song was inspired by the cheering of her fans during her ‘Born This Way Ball,’ as it kept her feeling motivated, despite being in pain, before she had to cancel due to a hip injury. The lyrics in the song address how much Gaga relies on her fans’ support to keep going and how she lives to perform.

The song has an unbelievably catchy chorus so it isn’t surprising that it had the success that it did. It peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Lady Gaga’s twelfth top ten single, and the track has also been certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

We all know that Lady Gaga never does music videos half-heartedly and ‘Applause’ was no exception. The upbeat masterpiece was accompanied by a music video which was directed by fashion photography duo Inez and Vindooh, who explained that the video symbolises the struggle that Lady Gaga went through to get back on stage and becoming a fully complete person once she was up there performing. The video has currently had over 250 million views on YouTube. Insert applause here (excuse the pun).

Gaga fans have been celebrating the third birthday of ‘Applause’ on social media by Tweeting with the hashtag #3YearsOfApplause and expressing their pride for their musical idol.
