13 Reasons Why has officially been renewed for Season Two

13 Reasons Why has officially been renewed by Netflix for a second season.

The first season, based on the best-selling book by Jay Asher, told the story of Hannah Baker, a high school junior who committed suicide and left behind 13 tapes which explained why she took her own life.

After much speculation, it has finally been confirmed that a second season will air in 2018. The official Twitter account tweeted: “Their story isn’t over. Season 2 of #13ReasonsWhy is coming.” alongside a video showing key locations from the series.

Executive producer Selena Gomez also shared the video, with cast members including Alisha Boe and Christian Navarro also taking to social media to confirm the news.

The Netflix tagline states that season two “picks up in the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s death and the start of the characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second season will consist of 13 hour-long episodes with Brian Yorkey returning as showrunner.

The character of Hannah Baker, played by Katherine Langford, is central to the events of the first season, but does her death mean that she won’t be featuring in the second installment? The show’s flashback structure means we can hope to see Katherine reprise her role. Speaking prior to the confirmation of season two, showrunner Yorkey said: “One of the things that is a fundamental element of our show is the weaving of past and the present. Hannah’s story is still very much not finished. She’s an integral part of whatever the next chapter of the story is, and she’s very much still at the center of it.”

Despite being based on Jay Asher’s novel, the Netflix series veered away a little from the original story, leaving us with several cliffhangers at the end of the thirteenth episode. The show has been a runaway success, becoming the most tweeted about show of 2017, so we’re not surprised to hear that it’s been renewed for a second season. With many questions left to be answered, we hope the second installment will bring the closure fans need.
