Netflix has finally dropped the mysterious and intriguing trailer for the upcoming third season of the controversial teen drama, 13 Reasons Why. This series, the show appears to reinvent itself as a murder mystery of a major character and is sure to send chills down your spine.
‘Who killed Bryce Walker? Who cares?’
The newly released trailer of the third season confirms a major character’s death and follows a mystery trail. The trailer hints at something very fishy and seriously ominous happening at the Liberty High School and the students are shocked by the sudden death of star athlete and bully Bryce Walker (played by actor Justin Prentice). Yes, you heard it right. Bryce Walker is dead and there are plenty of questions surrounding his death. Everyone is treated as suspects, taking the season in the direction of a murder mystery. Additionally, the third season will introduce a new character, Ani (played by Grace Saif), who’s shown in the trailer and will play an important role in leading the story.
This new murder-mystery twist has once again ignited tensions within the school as suspects will be questioned with the murderer still roaming free. The show appears to be embracing a dark and thrilling tone by focusing on a murder mystery plot-line, perhaps in an effort to get away from its previous focused angle on suicide as Netflix has received major backlash and been under intense scrutiny ever since the show premiered in 2017.
As the official Netflix synopsis reads:
“Eight months after preventing Tyler from committing an unthinkable act at Spring Fling, Clay, Tony, Jessica, Alex, Justin, and Zach find ways to shoulder the burden of the cover-up together while helping Tyler move toward recovery. But when the aftermath of a tumultuous Homecoming game culminates in the disappearance of a football player, and Clay finds himself under police scrutiny, it’s up to a shrewd outsider to steer the group through an investigation that threatens to lay bare everyone’s deepest secrets. The stakes are raised in this riveting third season of ’13 Reasons Why,’ as the consequences of even the most well-intended actions can alter a life forever.”
Based on the young adult novel of the same name by Jay Asher and created by Tony-winning playwright Brian Yorkey with executive producer Tom McCarthy, 13 Reasons Why is a teen melodrama about a young girl who takes her own life. The title is derived from the 13 tapes she leaves, each addressed to a different person in her life, detailing the reasons why she committed suicide. The series has received criticism for romanticizing suicide, leading as a result, Netflix edited a scene from the season one finale that showed Hannah Baker committing suicide
On Thursday, Netflix further announced that the show has been renewed for a fourth and final season. The network also confirmed that there will be no suicide in season three.
