The day has finally come! The 1975 has released their sophomore album titled I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it. It has been over two years since the 2013 release of the band’s self-titled debut album, and their second LP is now ready to be heard by the public.

The band’s second album focuses on situations that occurred in their lives over the past two years, covering everything from drugs to the death of lead singer Matty Healy’s grandmother. The 17 track album is brutally honest and holds nothing back lyrically. I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it showcases the evolving sound of the band and proves that the direction in which they are heading has no limits.

This album does not follow any specific genre boundaries. Some songs on the album such as “A Change of Heart” feel as if they could be straight from the 1980s while “If I Believe You” has a slow jazz tune. Other tracks such as “The Sound” and “This Must Be My Dream” are directly pop-oriented.

One standout track on the album was “The Ballad of Me and My Brain.” This is a soulful and deep ballad in which Healy touches on a heavier side of his life. The raw emotion that is emitted in this song is untouchable. The song begins with Healy admitting,

“Well I think I’ve gone mad, isn’t that so sad? What a shame that you’ve lost a brain that you never had.”

Another track that really stood out to us was “Loving Someone.” The song begins with haunting voices echoing and then transforms into Healy almost rapping. Think Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t” meets The 1975!

A song named “Nana” is the most personal on the album. Healy wrote this song about his grandmother who passed away. The track describes how much he misses her, needs her guidance and strives to be like her. Healy sings,

“I sat with you beside your bed and cried for things that I wish I’d said.”

Overall, The 1975’s new album has gone above and beyond our expectations. The band continues to release songs that make the listener think, while also making them dance. We are so excited that the album has finally made its way to our ears!

Check out the band’s music video for their latest single, “The Sound.”
