After AlunaGeorge released her EP Champagne Eyes back in October 2018, she’s enchanting us again with the NSFW visuals her collaboration with Bryson Tiller on “Cold Blooded Creatures” deserves.
Along with the premiere of the official music video, AlunaGeorge shared a personal essay on Broadly. to discuss the idea for the visuals. “The “Cold Blooded Creatures” video takes a snapshot of an idyllic moment when two strangers have decided to be completely comfortable with themselves… just two open-hearted people, approaching each other with the intention of discovery, humanness, and intimacy,” Aluna writes in the personal essay. “We chose to stop before they touch because the video is not about what these people do in the bedroom — I wanted to focus on the how.”
This EP is driven by different life encounters Aluna Francis, the vocalist of AlunaGeorge has experienced as well as the confidence she’s gained along the way. As seen in the singles “I’m in Control” and “Mean What I Mean,” both address women taking control of their sexualities and advocating for sexual consent.
For the music video, Aluna decided to use a “one-night stand” as a form of liberation and not portrayed as a shallow, drunken mistake. “I wondered what it would be like if you decided, because you were never going to see that person again, to just be your most natural self, without the mask of who we often pretend to be or the investment we have in showing our “best,” “hottest” selves to a potential partner,” Aluna added.
The video was directed by Award-winning duo rubberband. (Jason Sondock and Simon Davis), who has directed multiple videos for Calvin Kline and Migos rapper Offset. They decided to show a group of men and women in two frames simultaneously walking towards each other, stripping naked under powerful ambient lights.
“When we took on this project, we wanted to challenge the way sexuality is depicted in a music video context,” the directors added. “Our goal, beyond translating the song into image and remaining true to AlunaGeorge’s aesthetic, was to strip away the judgement surrounding sexuality. Showing a sexual encounter in its simplest form: two people granting permission to be witnessed in their most vulnerable state.”
