Ansel Elgort is back in the music scene with the release of his latest single, ‘Thief’. Since his first venture into singing last year with the track ‘Home Alone’, Ansel has signed with Island Records to properly launch his music career.
‘Thief’ is a mysterious and sleek single, with strong electronic-synth vibes. The track features the catchy lyrics: “Call me a thief / There’s been a robbery / I left with her heart / Tore it apart / Made no apologies.” If acoustic is more your style, Ansel promised that we can expect a piano cover of ‘Thief’ sometime soon!

The steamy music video for ‘Thief’ also dropped today. Starring Ansel and his girlfriend Violetta Komyshan, the video highlights their natural chemistry, but it also has some darker undertones. Ansel fabricated quite a mysterious character for himself while creating the song, fittingly called the ‘Thief’. Ansel told Rolling Stone:
“I couldn’t wait to bring [the Thief] to life in the video. For the performance, we wanted something colorful and rich. We went with an all-leather outfit and neon lighting while I sang and danced, like an Eighties dance video.”
The video was directed by Ansel’s brother, Warren Elgort, and edited by Ansel himself. The dark vibes of the video are said to be inspired by the likes of American Psycho and Michael Jackson.
Before releasing music under his own name, Ansel had been making music for years under his DJ alter ego, Ansolo, while also sustaining a successful acting career. He has starred in movies such as The Fault in Our Stars and Divergent, and will appear in three new movies this year. On Twitter, Ansel confirmed that the release of ‘Thief’ is just the beginning, and that more music is on the way. Hopefully some live performances will be in cards sometime!
