Ariana Grande has debuted at number one on the UK Official Singles Chart with her new single ‘thank u, next’.

The singer knocked Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Shallow’ from the top spot, notching up 73,000 combined sales including 6.7 million streams. Not only has Ariana racked up an impressive number of streams in the UK, but she has also broken the record for the most Spotify streams in a single day for a song by a female artist.

‘thank u, next’ is Ariana’s third UK number one. She previously topped the charts in 2014 with ‘Problem’ featuring Iggy Azalea and ‘Bang Bang’ with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj.

Since its release, ‘thank u, next’ has captured the hearts of Ariana’s fans and music lovers across the world thanks to its honesty and encouragement of self-love. The track begins with the songstress referencing her past lovers, thanking them for teaching her ‘love, patience, and pain’. Whilst many relationships often end in a bitter manner, Ariana looks back at hers in a positive light.

However, as the song progresses, Ariana states that lately she’s been found someone else…herself. “She taught me love. She taught me patience. How she handles pain. That sh*t’s amazing,”, Ari sings, as she acknowledges that despite all of the pain she has experienced over the past few years, she is still standing strong when it could have been so easy for her to crumble.

‘thank u, next’ is taken from Ariana’s forthcoming fifth studio album, also expected to be called thank u, next. No release date has been given yet, but we couldn’t be more excited for another new era of music from the vocal powerhouse.
