This Artist 101 guide contains everything you need to know about Bulgaria’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018, EQUINOX.
Who are EQUINOX?
EQUINOX is a Bulgarian Common Framework of five artists who will represent Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon with the song ‘Bones’.
The five-piece group consists of Bulgarian singers: Zhana Bergendorff, Georgi Simeonov, and Vlado Mihailov, alongside American singers: Johnny Manuel and Trey Campbell. It is believed that the origin of their name ‘EQUINOX’ comes from the term of the same word which is the day where daytime and nighttime are of approximately equal duration all over the planet. This day is celebrated around the world and it is important for all major religions. Milanov also states that the word comes from equality, meaning all members of the group are equal.
The lead singer of the Bulgarian project, Zhana Bergendorff, has been in the Bulgarian spotlight before by winning the 2013 season of X Factor Bulgaria. The now Eurovision Song Contest participant went on to release a catalogue of singles following her win, with one of the singles claiming the top spot of Bulgaria’s Singles Chart in 2015. After achieving commercial success, Bergendorff has now joined forces with two Bulgarian singers along with two American singers to form EQUINOX.
Trey Campbell, an American band member of EQUINOX, is based in Los Angeles and has worked with the likes of Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and Alexandra Stan, who you may remember for her summer hit a few years ago – ‘Mr. Saxobeat’.
