‘Safety Pin’ is the seventh song on 5 Seconds Of Summer’s second album, Sounds Good Feels Good. The song is not only a fan favorite it is part of the new graphics for 5SOS, a broken heart attached with a safety pin. The song was written by Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Michael Clifford, Ashton Irwin, and Emily Warren.

Runaways, we’re the long lost children
Running to the edge of the world

When we heard the song it made us want to jump up out of our seat and dance our heart out. Not only is it a catchy, dance your heart out jam, it’s one of the most relatable tracks on the album. It tells the story of two broken hearts that want nothing more than to be mended.

Before we get started on delving deeper into this song, we would like to state that songs are down to interpretation, and this is just one of them. The meaning we think is behind this song is not fact, and we simply would hope that you enjoy reading it; taking ideas and inspiration from it, possibly looking at the song in a different light to before.

Beyond The Song: 'Vapor' by 5 Seconds of Summer 1

“We are the kings and the queens of the new broken scene” is a line from their first single from Sounds Good Feels Good, “She’s Kinda Hot”. Part of the theme of the album is heard in every song, it’s okay to be different. “Saftey Pin” tells of acceptance and love for being who you are.

Patching up all the holes until we both feel much better

There is nothing easy about being heartbroken or feeling so outcasted that you feel empty inside. There is something amazing about finding something or someone who makes all those holes feel full, and who makes you feel complete.

Beyond The Song: 'Safety Pin' 1

No more waiting, we can save us from falling

Perhaps the song has a much deeper and much more personal connection to the fans than we thing. It’s possible “Safety Pin” is a letter to the fans from 5SOS themselves. The fans are a safe place for the band and the band is a safe place for the fans. When either are down, the other is there to lift them up.  This song could be a letter telling their fans that although they are two separate pieces, they are of the same heart. Two pieces that love, compassion, and strength will keep together for a lifetime.

There is no denying it whether “Safety Pin” is a ballad of broken hearts or a letter to the fans that it is relatable and captivating.
