Billie Eilish and her brother and principal collaborator Finneas O’Connell emerged victorious at the 2024 Grammy Awards, clinching the prestigious Song of the Year trophy for their poignant composition, “What Was I Made For?” featured on the 2023 Barbie movie soundtrack.

The victory was met with surprise, even from the typically unflappable Eilish, who candidly exclaimed her disbelief upon receiving the award. “Yikes… Damn, that’s stupid guys,” she remarked, visibly taken aback by the win.

The sibling duo, renowned for their seamless creative partnership, expressed gratitude towards their fellow nominees and the esteemed director Greta Gerwig, whom Billie Eilish credited for crafting “the best movie of the year” with Barbie. “Whoa, literally like I was looking at everybody’s faces, and I was like, ‘Yo, I just want to say everybody in this category, like, down was a crazy list of incredible people, incredible artists, and I feel crazy right now,’” she continued.

“What Was I Made For?” served as a highlight of the evening, earning the duo the Song of the Year honour and the Grammy award for Best Song Written for Visual Media earlier in the night. Their stirring performance of the ballad underscored its emotional depth, captivating audiences and critics alike. The song received a total of five Grammy nominations and placed 9th on Rolling Stone‘s 100 Best Songs of 2023.

“What Was I Made For?” was up against a tough field of competitors, including Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Vampire,” SZA‘s “Kill Bill,” Lana Del Rey‘s “A&W,” and Jon Batiste‘s “Butterfly.” The list also included Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” (also for the Barbie soundtrack), Miley Cyrus‘ chart-topping “Flowers,” and Taylor Swift‘s massive “Anti-Hero” track from Midnights.

The win marks Eilish’s seventh Grammy triumph, reaffirming her status as a musical powerhouse. Notably, it’s her third victory in the Song of the Year category, placing her among an elite cohort of artists.

With an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song on the horizon, anticipation mounts for Eilish and Finneas’ potential Oscar success. Their track’s resonant storytelling and evocative melody position it as a frontrunner for the coveted award, highlighting their versatility and lasting impact on both the music and film industries.

As the spotlight continues to shine on the dynamic duo, Eilish and Finneas, their latest win solidifies their legacy as two of the most formidable talents in contemporary music, with their artistic prowess transcending boundaries and captivating audiences worldwide.
