BLACKPINK member Jennie has debuted as a soloist with her new single, “SOLO.” She is the first of the group’s four members to release a solo track. The other members, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rose are also expected to release music of their own soon, according to label YG Entertainment.
Jennie first debuted the track at BLACKPINK’s Seoul “In Your Area” concert held this weekend. Speaking of her debut single at a recent press conference, she said, “The track was revealed at BLACKPINK’s concert, but I still can’t believe the track is going to be actually released. I should get ready to feel it.”
She added that the song represents two versions of her, one that is vulnerable and fragile and one that is confident and independent. The music video plays with this concept by having Jennie showing two personas. In some scenes, she appears depressed over a breakup and longs for that other person, while at other times, she appears feeling liberated by it.
The track’s title and chorus of “I’m going solo” also plays with the fact that the single is Jennie’s first without the rest of the BLACKPINK members. Taking her concept of the single, her message could also be interpreted to mean that she feels vulnerable without her members by her side. At the same time, she could feel a sense of freedom to finally express herself as a solo artist.
