Childish Gambino has dropped a new single titled, ‘This Is America’ after guest hosting the May 5th episode of SNL.
Donald Glover, or better known for his musical ego as Childish Gambino, has unexpectedly dropped a new single titled, ‘This Is America’. The politically dark single is Gambino’s first release since his Grammy nominated 2016 LP, ‘Awaken, My Love!‘. ‘This Is America’ lyrically demonstrates strong rap verses on the experience of being a black person in America. With lyrics such as, ‘You just a black man in this world / you just a barcode.’, you can see why this new single is a hot topic right now.
‘This Is America’ is also Childish Gambino’s first musical release since leaving his former label, Glassnote and signing with RCA Records in January 2018. Gambino has described the label move as, ‘a necessary change of pace’. Gambino released three LPs with Glassnote, 2011’s ‘Camp’, 2013’s ‘Because The Internet’ and 2016’s ‘Awaken, My Love!’, with his most notable singles being 2013’s ‘3005’ and 2016’s ‘Redbone’, which you may recognise after it became a meme shortly after its release.
With ‘This Is America’ dropping whilst Gambino was on SNL, he performed it live for the first time at SNL’s Studio 8H. He also debuted a new song titled, ‘Saturday’ as his first performance of the night and also appeared in various SNL skits. From an 80s Music Video skit to Barbie’s Instagram skit, Donald Glover had us in stitches with his incredible acting.
‘This Is America’ and ‘Saturday’ are the first two musical releases ahead of Childish Gambino’s anticipated fourth LP, which is expected to be released at some point later on in the year. After being snubbed at the 2018 Grammy Awards and various other awards with his previous LP ‘Awaken, My Love!’, we sure hope CG4 sees Gambino get the success he truly deserves.
Childish Gambino’s latest single, ‘This Is America’ is available now.
