On Jan. 13 in an interview panel at the ACE Comic Con in Arizona, actor Chris Evans spoke out about his Avengers costar Robert Downey Jr. and his mentorship and good spirit on set.
“He’s such a wonderful guy and is so talented, so experienced, and so supportive. He’s always been in my corner. I’ve always felt supported by him,” Evans said in the panel that also featured costars Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie.
It’s an often forgotten fact that Downey was the one that persuaded Evans to accept the role as Captain America ten years ago. Back in 2010, Evans had declined a contract with Marvel Studios multiple times, feeling uneasy about being binded to six films — a deal unusual and unheard of. However, a spontaneous heart-to-heart phone call from Downey helped Evans make the decision to take on the role — a role that boosted his acting career and helped make “Chris Evans” a solid household name.
“(Downey) really is so irreplaceable. Nobody can ever be Iron Man,” said Evans. “It’s not a role like Superman or Batman that can kind of find different incarnations. No one can touch it. No one can.”
Downey began the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” journey when he took on the role as Tony Stark in the 2008 Iron Man, marking it as the first of seventeen (and growing) successful films. For hardcore fans and simple moviegoers alike, it has become impossible to imagine someone else playing the iconic Tony Stark, especially when Downey’s personality is often so naturally exhibited through the witty character.
“No matter what it feels like for me, I try to imagine what it feels like for him, because he really did start this,” Evans said. “I wonder what that feels like to come to the end of the road.”
Downey and Evans recently wrapped up filming Avengers: Infinity War and the still-unnamed fourth Avengers movie earlier this month. (Spoiler link: Set photos of the Marvel cast surfaced on social media last week.) With multiple acting contracts due by the end of Avengers 4, including those of Downey and Evans, it looks like it’ll be a tough goodbye for both fans and the Marvel actors and actresses that watched on and off-screen friendships bloom over the years.
“(Downey) really brings everybody in to the group and makes sure everyone feels welcome, especially on this last film,” said Evans about Downey on and off set.
