Back in 2009, JJ Abrams addressed rumors concerning a sequel to the 2008 Horror/Adventure film, Cloverfield.
“We have an idea that we thought was pretty cool that we’re playing with, which means there will be something that’s connected to Cloverfield, but I hope it happens sooner rather than later because the idea is pretty sweet.”
Abrams hopes were dashed as time passed, and the buzz surrounding the idea quieted.
Until now.
Abrams, in partnership with Paramount Pictures, delighted fans everywhere by releasing a trailer for a film set in the same universe as Cloverfield.
In a statement to Collider, Abrams reveals where the idea for the film, titled 10 Cloverfield Lane, came from.
“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
By using the phrase “blood relative,” Abrams makes it unclear as to whether or not 10 Cloverfield Lane is a sequel or prequel.
Luckily we won’t have long to wait, as the film is set to release on March 11th of this year.
This post-apocalyptic film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg and features John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher.
The trailer contains almost no dialogue and falls just under the two-minute mark. You can check it out below.
