Reid Smith, better known by his stage name Reid the Martian, is a rapper, singer, songwriter, and musician.
Reid became interested in music when his parents gave him his first set of drums at the age of 3, and by age 5 he was singing and acting in musicals and plays in his hometown. It wasn’t until 2011 when Reid began to pursue a solo career in hip-hop. Since then, Reid has been hard at work getting his music out in the world. Reid’s first two singles as an independent hip-hop artist were “Introduction” and “Work,” released in March 2012, under the name Rabbiteater.
He spent most of 2014 composing and recording in Los Angeles with noted producers like Duane “DaRock” Ramos, who worked with artists such as LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, Faith Evans, and Mary J. Blige. He also got the chance to work with Grammy® Award winning producer Aldrin “DJ Toomp” Davis, who worked with artists such as T.I., and Kanye West as well as Miykal Snoddy who has worked with Trey Songz, Lupe Fiasco, Jamie Foxx, and Diddy.
In December of 2015 Reid went to a studio in Kansas City to begin working on his new album titled Excuses Not To Sleep. Being his first album as Reid The Martian, Reid made it special by writing and producing all the songs on the album as well as playing all the instruments, besides the trumpet. Excuses Not To Sleep was finished in May and released June 10, 2016.
We took the time to listen to “The Other Side” off of Excuses Not To Sleep and we have to admit, it’s really catchy! Reid’s music reminded us of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis due to the fact that he has another vocalist featured on this particular track, similar to Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis’ track “Same Love” featuring Mary Lambert. They’re also similar in terms of the song having a positive and inspirational aspect to it. Now the only question we have left is, who’s the stunning female vocal on the track?
