New Zealand band Drax Project are kicking off their 2019 in style by releasing a collaboration with the incredible Hailee Steinfeld.
The four-piece first unveiled ‘Woke Up Late’ last year, and it quickly became a hit. Now, with over 14 million Spotify streams and a Vodaphone New Zealand “Single of the Year” Music Award under their belts, Drax Project are giving the track a new lease of life by releasing it as a collaboration with Hailee.
Unveiled as Zane Lowe’s World Record on Beats 1 on Monday (January 21), the new version of ‘Woke Up Late’ captures the fun of the original but gives the listener an additional perspective. Hailee’s vocals complement the band’s sound exquisitely, creating the perfect little pop bop that you’ll be adding to your playlist immediately.
Speaking about the track and working with Hailee, Drax Project said: “‘Woke Up Late’ is about wrapping your head around the adventure of the night before and ultimately deciding that you’re cool with it. Given the nature of this story, it did cross our minds while writing it as to how it might work as a duet – with a female voice telling her side.
“We’re all huge big fans of ‘Starving’ and ‘Let Me Go,’ so were beyond stoked to get Hailee on song! She absolutely kills it in movies and in music. We feel like having her vocals take both the sonics and the feel of the song to another level!”

This collaboration is the latest in a long line of successes for Drax Project. The band have been busy wowing crowds all over the world after supporting the likes of Camila Cabello, Ed Sheeran and Lorde on tour. They’ve also been performing their own headline shows, and broke Lorde’s record for the fastest selling club show in Auckland history.
Last year, the four-piece, made up of Shaan, Matt, Ben and Sam, released their NOON EP which includes ‘Woke Up Late’ and the certified gold ‘Toto’. The EP perfectly captures their unique sound, proving why they are an exciting band you should be keeping an eye on.
Having signed to a major label, Drax Project are currently busy in the studio working on new music. If their previous releases are anything to go by then their forthcoming body of work is set to be something quite spectacular.
