News of a secret Ed Sheeran album has spread like wildfire amongst dedicated Sheeran fans today; but before you get too excited, you should know that Ed is not planning on releasing the new material anytime soon.
Ed has revealed that he has actually been working on his “secret” studio album consistently for six years. The musician started working on record number one before he had even released his 2011 debut album, Plus, and adds one new track to the incomplete album each year.
Speaking about his exciting revelation, Sheeran said “I’ve been working on this one since the same time as Plus. Every year I write a song that will go on it. So I have about 6, 7 at the moment.”
The “secret” 4th album is assumed to be called Subtract, following the trend of his three previous albums being named Plus (2011), Multiply (2014), and his most recent album, Divide (2017). When asked, Ed explained that the album will focus less on pop “hits”, and more on acoustic music.
“It’s not necessarily experimental but I don’t think there’ll be any hot radio songs on it this time. It’s a very acoustic record.”
The global superstar, who recently performed at Glastonbury Festival (June 25), says that this is very much a work in progress, and that fans will have to wait a while before they can hear the finished product. Ed Sheeran even suggested that it may not even be the next record he releases!
Sheeran commented, “It will potentially come later, because it’s been about six years in the making and it might be another three or four. So I might put other stuff out before then just to have something out.”
It seems that in the meantime, Ed would be interested in some collaborations with fellow pop superstar, Justin Bieber! He said that he is “always up for working with Bieber”, and it wouldn’t be the first time – Justin’s 2015 hit, Love Yourself, was well known for being written by Ed Sheeran. Talking about Justin Bieber, Ed teased “I’ve got some ideas. I think he’s really talented.”
