Two-time Grammy-winning R&B artist Elijah Blake teams up with season six American Idol winner Jordin Sparks on their new single/music video, “Deux.”
Talking about working with Jordin Sparks, Elijah shares, “I remember how powerful it was hearing Jordin’s vocals for the first time watching ‘American Idol’ surrounded by the whole family and it still rings the same today. Only difference today is she is my family and we’ve had each other’s backs through this musical journey for years now and our love for ‘90s duets runs deep. Real deep. In fact, it’s the thing that brought us together and keeps that musical pairing stronger even today. Songs like ‘One Sweet Day’, ‘Spend My Life With You,’ and almost everything from Avant and Keke Wyatt inspired this collab. I hope the fans see this as a progression sonically from what we started with the ‘1990 Forever’ project.”
While Jordin says, “Elijah is one of my favorite people to work with in the world. Whether it’s songwriting, singing, performing or fashion, Elijah always delivers. Our voices blend together in a way that feels like magic. ‘Deux’ is a piece that’s been a long time coming and I’m so happy you get to hear it now.”
After signing with NO ID’s ARTium/DEF JAM imprint in 2012, Elijah Blake dropped his debut mixtape, Bijoux 22, followed by his debut album, Shadows & Diamonds, featuring “I Just Wanna,” which amassed more than 150 million streams around the world. In 2016, Elijah began releasing a series of independent projects, including Blueberry Vapors, Audiology, Bijou 23, 1990 Forever with Jordin Sparks, and Holiday Love.
Internationally renowned as the winner of American Idol’s sixth season, Jordin Sparks dropped her debut single, “This Is My Now,” after winning the show. She followed by releasing “Tattoo,” collecting over 110 million streams on Spotify. In 2007, she released her self-titled debut album, featuring both “Tattoo” and “No Air” with Chris Brown. “No Air” took the third slot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. In 2015, Jordin released Right Here Right Now, followed by 2020’s Cider & Hennessey.
“Deux” opens on delicious, glowing washes of R&B riding a low-slung, alluring rhythm as Jordin’s creamy vocals imbue the lyrics with quixotic flavors. When Elijah’s soft tenor enters, the tune takes on gentle, sensual textures. As the two voices blend, the outcome is exquisite, infusing the song with warm, evocative savors.
With “Deux,” Elijah Blake and Jordin Sparks deliver cashmere R&B laced with luxurious leitmotifs and voluptuous vocals.
