With the unveiling of her latest single ‘Cheating On Her’, British singer-songwriter Emily Burns tells a story of paranoia and infidelity, inspired by real life events.
Serving as the follow up to previous release ‘Balcony Floor’, the powerful and intimate track serves as something of a window into the “paranoia and strain” that can damage a new relationship between two people who have previously been unfaithful.
Layered with an array of atmospheric synths and distorted sound bites, the sonically cheery yet lyrically sombre track effortlessly captures Burns’ knack for storytelling, with her captivating vocal bringing the songs message to life in a way that feels relatable and authentic.
Commenting on the song, Emily says via a press release: “I wrote ‘Cheating On Her’ after two of my friends ended up in a relationship born out of infidelity. I remember conversations with both of them, telling me how paranoid and insecure they felt despite loving each other.”
“The song is about that feeling of unease in a relationship that was built on lies and deception. The checking one another’s phones, the flashbacks to how it all began and the worry that it might come back to bite them one day. It’s the epitome of ‘once a cheater, always a cheater’.”
Directed and Produced by CAMILLE, the singles accompanying music video depicts the “conflicting emotions of a breakdown of a relationship” showcased through contemporary dancers.
In a detailed synopsis explaining the concept and thought behind emotive clip Burns’ team say: “The movement expressed through the means of dance follows the beauty in romance whilst simultaneously exhibiting how one’s inner turmoil can manifest into an obsession that takes control of the whole body”.
