“It’s been so hot today, it feels like the champagne has reached boiling temperature and is about to explode,” Jade from Blusher tells CelebMix backstage at The Waiting Room as the trio prepares for their first ever headline show.
The Aussie is talking about the band’s latest sun-kissed single ‘Overglow’, but it’s a metaphor that couldn’t be more appropriate as the group deliver a jaw-dropping hour of charismatic electropop.
The first ever Blusher headline show comes off the back of supporting Daði Freyer in the U.K. last year and recent sets at London Pride and alongside Kylie Minogue in Hyde Park. “We really want to be adopted,” Jade jokes when asked if the girls feel part Londoner by now.
“We love it here. It does feel like a second home and there’s such a buzz in summer. It’s really fun to be around that.”
Fun is very much at the heart of what Blusher do. The band’s super slick set is made so memorable by quirky lyrics and light-hearted choreo – it’s pop music as it’s most endearing.
Aware of the occasion on Friday night, the magnitude of the moment is tangible as the trio weave their way through the crowd to get to the stage. Yet, by the time the second chorus of ‘Limelight’ hits, Blusher have blown away any nerves.
“We are so used to going in cold and having to win people over,” Jade admits in the cosy backstage room minutes before they hit the stage. “It’s going to be such a crazy feeling. It’s a big night.”
With tracks such as ‘Rave Angel’ to their name, it’s with ease that the band make their debut headline special. That track in inspired from sneaking into a Charli XCX DJ set – the mention of Ms Brat greeted with a cheer – and that flick showcases that the trio share the superstar’s electric energy.
What’s frightening is that the best is clearly still to come with Blusher. ‘I Promise’ is a brilliantly gushy number punctuated by thick synths while ‘Somebody New’ is begging for plays at both the club and on the radio.
Latest single ‘Overglow’ is another highlight. Lauren shares her bewilderment at that song being taken from production sessions sat in bed to London on a Friday night, and its slow build ends up rattling The Waiting Room’s walls by the final chorus.
The night ends with a flurry. ‘Accelerator’ is a clear fan favourite, the type of song whose first beat is greeted with a wall of cheers.
That track has popped up at alt-pop club nights across London in recent months too, something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the group. “It’s the perfect scenario to hear that song,” Miranda admits.
“That’s definitely what we wrote it for. We started the writing session at midday but mentally were at a club.”
The first ever Blusher headline show come to a close on ‘Backbone’, perhaps the standout song on the group’s recent support sets for new fans thanks to its funny tale of the girls delivering a punch to a certain ex.
“The choose your fighter character thing is really fun to get into and there’s nothing better than throwing a fake punch,” Miranda laughs.
“We’ve seen people do those moves along with us and pick them up which is nuts. It’s a great song about the friendship between us as well and having each other’s backs.”
A clever closing choice, Miranda isn’t wrong with the song’s euphoria met with a poignancy. It’s impossible not to be taken by Blusher – they are what pop music is all about.
