To coincide with the release of ‘Like I Used To’, CelebMix speaks to Cally about her new single, 2018 and her future plans.

Hi, first things first – how are you? How has 2019 been treating you so far?

Hey, I’m great thank you. 2019 has been positive. I’ve released ‘Like I Used To’ and I’ve also recorded my next single.

2018 was a very successful year for you – how does it all feel?

That’s kind! It was an exciting year. I put out three songs and enjoyed the entire process from writing to releasing them. Getting BBC Radio Shropshire’s ‘BBC Introducing Artist of the Year Award’ was so encouraging. My favourite 2018 moment was hearing my song ‘Anyone But You’ on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Is was one of those awesome moments of seeing hard work pay off. I’d say overall ‘System’ was my most well-received song. It meant a lot to me and I think it’s streaming figures showed that people possibly felt that and connected with it most.

You’ve just released your brand new single ‘Like I Used To’ – can you tell us a little about that?

It’s an honest song about realising you no longer love someone in the same way you once did. The lyrics are really conversational and I wanted the song to come across like a conversation with an ex. It’s not meant to be a bitter song but a truthful one.

The single flickers between pop, R&B and dance universes – is this something you had in mind when it came to creating the track?

I never try to stick to one music universe for the purpose of neatly fitting into a genre. I think if the song benefits emotionally from crossing over to a few different realms, then I’m happy to do that to get my ideal vibe.

‘Like I Used To’ addresses moving on from a past love – is it important to you to be honest and personal in your releases?

Absolutely. It’s cool to write about experiences from my own life. I think listeners can tell when a song is disingenuous. I love listening to songs about experiences I can personally relate to, so it’s important for my music to be relatable to others.

For this release, did the lyrics come first or the production? Do you have a preference?

The subject topic came first and then the melody. The lyrics then followed. I wrote this song at the piano so the production was the final thing but I had instrumentation in mind. I wanted it to be light and fresh.

Can we expect a music video to accompany the single anytime soon?

I don’t have one in mind. I’m focusing mainly on the music but you never know what’s around the corner.

If you could describe your single in just one word, what would it be?

    Honest.

What else does 2019 hold for you?

Playing live with my band! You’ll also hear two more singles before Summer.
