Laura Lamn is a quirky musician and creative who is certainly going to capture your attention with her clever wordplay.
2017 has proven to be a breakthrough year for Laura after garnering support from a number of high profile outlets. In celebration of International Women’s Day, she teamed up with Kaskade and S2_COOL to release their version of Chaka Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’. The collaboration caught the attention of Billboard and showcased her unique rap meets disco-house to the world.
Her latest offering is hip-house track ‘Boyfriend’, which also features S2_COOL. The slick track has been accompanied by a fun video which epitomises what Laura is about as an artist and a person. Without doubt, she is one to put on your radar for the future.
We recently caught up with Laura to discuss ‘Boyfriend’, female inspirations and what the future holds.
Hey Laura, thank you for answering our questions today! We love your latest track ‘Boyfriend’, featuring S2_Cool. Can you tell us more about the song and the inspiration behind it?
I wrote the song lyrics whilst skating around the skate park in Springville. It’s inspired by the feeling of having a teenage crush. The lyrics are silly and tongue in cheek. When we fall in love it makes us crazy!
The lyrics are playful and very clever in places! What’s your favourite/stand out lyric from ‘Boyfriend’?
Got to be “would you be my other half? Would you run me a bubble bath?” I’m a big bath fan, and that’s one of the best romantic gestures you could do for me. Haha
The music video looks like it was lot of fun to film! What was the filming experience like for you?
We crammed it all in one day and it was so much fun. The team was made up of friends and family- my dad, my brother, my cousin and lots of my mates. Despite it being a packed day we all had a laugh.
How much creative input did you get into the video and how did the concept come about?
I came up with the concept for the video and produced and styled it. It was a LOT of work. I wanted the video to capture the playful feeling of the song. I started coming up with visuals and the more I daydreamed about it the more and more elaborate the ideas became. My favourite bit was picking out all the costumes to go with each scene.
This isn’t the first time that you’ve worked with S2_Cool. What’s he like to work with?
I wrote these songs with Stu in Utah. We have a great musical chemistry, and I always enjoyed being in the studio with him.
Earlier this year, you teamed up with S2_Cool and Kaskade for your take on Chaka Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’. How did this collaboration come about?
Ryan (Kaskade) heard our take on “Woman” on Soundcloud and wanted to be a part of it. He brought that extra sparkle to the song.
The track and its video was released in support of International Women’s Day. Who are some of your favourite female inspirations?
Marawa the Amazing is one of my biggest inspirations and idols. She taught me how to dance and gave me the confidence to become more me.
Indy Jamma Jones, the founder of Planet Rollerskate is an amazing woman doing great things and her enthusiasm about skating makes me want to better myself.
Also my close girlfriends are my inspirations. Seeing them overcome the difficult challenges in life makes me realise how strong women can be.
As an artist, you’ve already received support from tastemakers including Billboard, BBC Introducing and BBC Radio 1. What does it mean to you to have such outlets on board with your music?
I have to pinch myself, because these are the dreams I’ve had since I was a kid. I can’t believe they like what I do.
Are you working towards an EP/album? If so, what can we expect from it?
I’ve started to play the guitar, and I’m hoping to start showing a more sensitive, heartfelt side to my music. I’m also singing more too and loving it. Haven’t quite figured out what form it will take just yet.
What else can we expect from Laura Lamn before the year’s out?
This year’s been a bit full on so far, so I think I’ll be hiding away for a bit working on the next special something to give the world.
Thank you to Laura for her time! Listen to ‘Boyfriend’ below.
