Australian DJ vocal and producer duo Bombs Away, consisting of members Matthew and Thomas Coleman, have been busy taking over both stages and studios this year. After many successful hits and with countless followers across social media, Bombs Away have impressed music fans again by reworking a blast from the past, “You Gotta Be” by Des’ree. In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, the dynamic duo opened up about their music, inspirations and more.
For fans who may not know, how did Bombs Away start?
It’s been a little while now, but we used to run events over in Perth and just started doing our own little support sets and it turned into something massive!
Why did you choose to rework “You Gotta Be” instead of another song? What about that song stands out to you?
There’s just something about that hook that says, “you’ve got this.” A lot of our music is about really grabbing life with both hands and going for it and this [song] really resonated with that vibe.
You worked with Reigan on this track! How was that and what did having Reigan’s voice on this track add to it?
Reigan was so amazing to work with. Her experience really shines through in her vocals and even the physical recording session went so smoothly it didn’t even feel like work.
If you could work with another artist this year, who would it be and why?
We would love to work with someone a little outside our regular sphere of influence again. Someone like Vance Joy or another singer who has that acoustic feeling really nailed.
After reworking this song and seeing how incredible it came out, are there any other songs you would be interested in reworking?
At the moment, we’ll probably focus on our new originals because there were a few limitations when working with someone else’s writing. It was definitely an experience we’ll repeat eventually though!
What has been inspiring Bombs Away and its music lately?
We have a few originals in the works which we have written while traveling, being outside and really enjoying life is what its all about. We aren’t here for long, [so] we have to make the most of it!
What has been a highlight of your career thus far?
The international tours really bring things into perspective, and shows how connected we can be as a species. After 22 hours [of] traveling, landing and feeling like we have family and friends there because everyone knows our music. It’s a great feeling!
If you could switch places with another artist, producer, musician for a day, who would it be and why?
Just for a day? Do we get all [of] their knowledge? It would be interesting to swap places with some of the great divas like Mariah and Whitney. Their talent and their view on life would be worlds apart from an Australian dance act!
Do you have any goals for the rest of this year?
[To] try to keep kicking them really. We are touring this single around the country for the next few months which is going to keep us busy!

More songs, more videos, more remixes [and] more good times!
