It’s been two years since Brooklyn graced our TV screens on the fourth series of The Voice UK. Since then, she has been working hard on creating a career in music. She recently released “Cupid” as her official debut single and is currently working on a debut EP.
During The Voice UK series four, she had three coaches turn for her. She chose to be on will.i.am’s team and got as far as the knockouts. She later released “Hold Up”, which was a remake of Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance”; before officially releasing “Cupid“.
Brooklyn released three versions of her debut single on 12 December 2016; then followed it up, five days later, by releasing a music video based on true events.
Now she’s gearing up to release more new music and a debut EP. Lucky for us, she found some time to have a chat with CelebMix.
Hey Brooklyn, how are you today? What have you been up to lately?
Hey, what’s good? :) I’m real good, thank you, yourself? Well, it’s just been Christmas so I’ve spent a lot of time with my family, which I love, and eating a lot of good food haha! But now the New Years here, I’m ready to grip it with both hands, make some sick music and let my creativity take the reigns.
We’re all good too. Your official debut single, “Cupid”, was released at the end of last year, how did the song come about?
Well, the song is actually based on a situation that happened to one of my gals; cut a long story short, her boyfriend cheated on her with another girl in our circle, so it was just like proper messed up and unexpected… But, yeah, I was with her when she went through all the different emotions so it just felt natural to write about it.
How did it feel to release it officially?
Sick! It’s a great feeling to release something that you’ve worked so hard on.
Why did you release three different versions of “Cupid”? Which one is your favourite?
Well, I work with some sick producers, one being J.A.K.I Wolfe, who is like insanely, massively, crazily dope, I swear he’s a wizard or something! He sent me over some versions and it only felt right to release them… My favourite is the grime mix.
What has the response been like for “Cupid”?
Gaaah amazing! I feel super blessed and grateful for the love and support!
What do you make of the music video? Is it everything you had hoped?
I’m in love with the video, it captures every element that I wanted it to. The song obviously has a strong story to it so I wanted to show that in the video and it was my co-directorial debut, watch this space!
You previously released “Hold Up”, how did that come about? And why did you choose to create your own version of “Buffalo Stance” by Neneh Cherry?
Neneh Cherry is an amazing artist and that song was about a lot in my childhood, so I thought it would be good to switch it up and do a lil sum sum with it haha.
Before all this, you auditioned for The Voice UK Season Four, what did you make of it? What was your favourite thing about being on The Voice UK?
Yeah, to be honest, it was a shock to get as far as I did… I’ve learned sooooo much and gained experience of performing on a national scale; observing behind the scenes; learning the difference between a tv show and the real music business. I enjoy the graft that goes into building your career independently.
If you could duet with anyone in the world, who would it be?
Chris Brown !!!!!!
It’s now 2017, how did you spend your Christmas and New Year? Do you have any traditions?
I was in the US for Christmas it’s something me and my family like to do for that time of year, so it was good vibes and good food!
As for the New Year… Let’s just say it was lit!
Have you made a New Year Resolution?
Not really, I’m not one for resolutions. I’m just looking forward to getting my material out there, even more, this year.
What plans do you have in store for 2017? What can we expect from you this year?
I’m almost close to finishing my EP, so I’m looking forward to releasing that. I’m definitely going to be releasing a few more singles first off the EP, and videos too; as well as do a lot more performances and definitely a tour.
Tell us more about your debut EP?
It’s going to be lit for sure. Expect some sick features on there too, I can’t wait for you to hear it.
Is there anything you want to say to your fans?
A big thank you for your support and messages on my socials and videos, I read all of them. Continue to support and get ready for some sick music from me this year. Maaaaaaad love!
