Ebru Ellis has had an illustrious career as a backing singer working with hugely successful artists such as Sam Smith and Craig David, but she is now launching her own music career with her debut single ‘Blocks‘.
Here we speak exclusively to Ebru about her debut release, working as a backing singer, tour plans and much, much more;
After singing back-up for a number of artists over the past few years, what does it feel like to now be centre stage?
It honestly feels great because I feel well equipped for centre stage! I’ve watched, admired and sung with some of the best artists in the world and I’ve seen how they handle the stage. Now I get to do it and be myself and engage with the crowd, only now as a performing artist! It’s exciting.
What has your backing career taught you about being in the spotlight?
I learnt that being good is the greatest barrier to being great and that you have to be a person of excellence; regardless of your role! I had to always be prepared and ready to deliver! I feel so blessed to have had this experience. Yes the hours are long and it’s not all glam, but it’s so much fun especially when you get to work with such amazing talent.
Have you been in touch with the likes of Sam Smith and Craig David?
Unfortunately not! But it was such a pleasure being just a small part of their journey and it’s so great seeing them do their thing! Who knows, maybe a collaboration might be in the offing?? (just putting that out there).
Your new single ‘Blocks’ is out now, what inspired the track?
Every one of us have goals and dreams that at times seem so far out of reach and I know what it’s like to keep trying and trying and feeling like it’s taking so long to get to where you want to be. So really, I just wanted to encourage people not to quit because most times, we are closer than we think! I went through a really tough time where I lost 9 years’ worth of music and hard work and I literally had to start all over again with nothing other than my voice and my ability to write (and of course an indescribably amazing team). Then I decided to go for The X Factor and got to judges houses before getting eliminated and it seemed like one closed door after another. I managed to keep my hope alive and decided that I wouldn’t let anything stop me. That’s the moment that ‘Blocks’ was created.
What do you hope listeners take from the single?
Sometimes we’ll experience temporary setbacks and at other times, it may seem like total failure. But how we react to it will determine our come back! I hope that listeners will feel encouraged to keep moving forward towards their individual dreams and aspirations. Most importantly don’t allow what people say about you to get in the way of what you want to become.
Do you have any plans to release an album this year?
I am currently in the process of writing my album, which is expected to be released next year. However, I do have an amazing five-track EP which will be out later this year!
Can fans expect a tour announcement soon?
I am currently in the middle of a radio tour doing interviews and some with live acoustic performances. My debut performance will be at the Jazz Cafe: supporting The London Community Gospel Choir on Friday 30th March, so you can catch me down there! I’m super excited and I can’t wait for people to hear what we’ve been working on!
What are your long term career goals?
All I have ever wanted to be is a performing artist and songwriter and I intend on being around for years to come. I’m looking forward to travelling the world and really establishing myself as a touring artist singing to thousands of people in different arenas. My dream is that my music will connect with people and touch their lives. Music is a universal language and I dream of my songs bringing hope, comfort and healing to people.
