In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, Rachel opens up about “Gold,” collaborations and more.
What can you tell us about your brand new single “Gold” and its message?
“Gold” is the first single I’ve released in 3 years. I took the time to find myself again and find the sound and genre I truly felt I belonged in. I needed to take my time to truly be authentic and reinvent myself. I took a year to write my new record out in Las Vegas and “Gold” is one of my favorites, for sure. It’s about striving to be the best you can be [and to] never ever settle for less. We’re all at war with ourselves every single day and I wrote “Gold” with my team to inspire those to aim higher, to reach for the stars. You’re the only one in your way. It’s about embracing the pain and trepidations and competition in life…letting it make you stronger [and] knowing there’s always room for improvement.
What was the process of creating this song like and how does it differ from what you have released in the past?
Creating this song was just such a blast. I had so much fun with this one and it was blessing to remind myself to keep pushing myself. We wrote this song halfway through the record and it was a nice breather from all the heartbreak / relationship-y songs we had written so far. “Gold,” along with the rest of the new record coming out, is extremely different than anything I’ve ever done. I’ve dabbled in almost every genre from pop to rock to broadway to EDM, but this new sound is by far my favorite. I won’t call it alternative because that’s just an easy way out… I simply leave it to the listeners to figure out for themselves. It’s compared to 10,000 different things and I’m proud that no one can put their finger on it.
How was it to make the music video? Did you have a favorite part to film?
It was unbelievably intense. Every scene you see is real and was filmed over and over and over again. I had so much fun. Everyone who knows me knows I’m a perfectionist and I want to get it done right if I’m gonna do it at all. In between takes, I jump-roped continuously or stretched or boxed or ran around like an idiot. I didn’t drink or eat anything on the whole shoot for 12 hours in fear that it would distract me or make me feel sluggish. It didn’t bother me, but everyone around me was a nervous wreck thinking I’d pass out or something.
My favorite part to film was sparring with the bags. My makeup artist kept spraying me down with water and glycerin to look extremely sweaty and it was just hilarious slipping and sliding all over the place but trying to act cool & graceful. My least favorite part was getting in the ice bath for one of the final scenes to shoot. It was brutal. That was very real and I was a cold sweaty mess at that point and that was the last thing I wanted to do. I stayed in there, turning blue for about 20 minutes and got the heck out of there. Good times.
If you could feature any artist on this track as a collaboration, who would it be and why?
For this particular track, I would definitely say Adam Lambert. He’s been one of my biggest heroes since I was 13. He has mastered rock vocals over pop/dance music which has been what I’ve been experimenting with lately. His voice is insane and I use my whole range like he does. I’ve learned a lot from him. I covered one of his songs the other day and posted it and he liked it and commented on the unicorn and heart-eye emoji… I pretty much needed CPR for the next 5 hours. Fangirl moment! Not to mention his face is just insanely beautiful.
Does “Gold” sound like the songs you are going to release in the future?
“Gold” is definitely one of the more fast-paced and high energy songs off the record. It’s one of those typical, pop formatted songs that is straight and to the point, where you’re singing along with the chorus by the second time it comes around. However, I like to take my listeners on a ride and tell a story, so I try to not make any song too similar to the last. It’s all about artistry and diversity for me. I want to give my fans and friends options. There are a few songs that are also high energy like “Gold,” but you will not find that I’m a “one trick pony” on this album.
