Kandace Springs is an exciting Nashville based artist whose new album ‘Indigo’ dropped last week. Springs is a really thrilling talent and her vocal ability was very much appreciated by the late, great Prince. In fact Prince once personally invited her to perform with him at Paisley Park for the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain.
Here we speak exclusively to Kandace Springs to discuss her new music, future plans, working with Prince, and more:
Growing up who inspired your love of music?
That’s an easy one – my Dad is a great R&B singer and he was always singing around the house. I also grew up watching him in his band (everybody knows Scat Springs in Nashville!). He saw that I have that musical spark and nurtured me along!
How would you describe your overall sound to new listeners?
I’m a complicated mix of Jazz, R&B and classical! It sounds crazy but somehow it all works. Nina Simone is a big hero of mine and she was all over the map too. I like to mix it all up into
one ball of music!
You were once personally invited by Prince to perform at the 30th anniversary of Purple Rain, what was that like?
It was unreal – I still can’t believe it happened sometimes! It all happened so fast – one minute he is Direct messaging me and the next minute I’m on stage with him at Paisley Park. It was amazing becoming his friend. I learned so much from him and he could always make me laugh..
How much do you feel Prince helped your career?
He helped me believe that I could combine all of these musical styles that make me who I am. And not to let anyone put me into a box that wasn’t true to me. That gave me so much confidence!
You have recently released your new album ‘Indigo’? What can fans expect from the record?
I’m so excited for the world to hear this album. It’s so ‘me’. Like I said, all the sides of me get to shine on this album. It definitely hits harder than my first album. But it still has jazzy vibes and allows my voice to breathe. Karriem Riggins did an amazing job on the production.
Are you planning on touring your new music?
I just finished a summer tour of US Arenas with Hall & Oates which was amazing! We played Madison Square Garden and the Los Angeles Forum! And I will be doing my own tour in the fall in the US as well as some European Dates – London Jazz Festival on November 17th at Queen Elizabeth Hall! And also Japan and China. Hittin’ the road!
Can you talk us through the inspiration behind the album?
I’m inspired by life! Relationships, every day experiences. You never know when an idea will drop into your lap. I’m just so happy I can express myself through the music that I love.
What are your long term career goals?
I just wanna keep reaching more people all around the world. I would love to one day headline The Royal Albert Hall! I played there with Gregory Porter, it was so amazing! And I love cars – I work on them, fix them, collect them – that’s my other passion. It would be amazing to combine my music and love of cars in a TV show one day! Boom!
