Exclusive Premiere: EMPRESS Releases Music Video for “Lovely I Am”

After telling other people’s stories through dance and theatre, EMPRESS is now ready to share her own story through her latest single and music video for “Lovely I Am.”

This multi-talented singer, songwriter, and dancer found her voice after spending over a decade as a classically trained professional ballerina with San Francisco Ballet (SFB) and playing the lead in the Broadway production of the TONY Award-winning An American In Paris.

Backed up by soulful vocals that spin a tale of pain, pleasure, and perseverance along with passionate dancing, “Lovely I Am,” is all about one clear message to her audience. That message is to simply know that YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL and that YOU ARE LOVELY.

With lyrics like, “I may not seem pretty to you, but lovely I am / I may not seem warm or fuzzy on the outside, but inside I am / I tried to obey your rules, don’t think that I can,” and “So I’ll smile and I’ll dance to the music / I can dance all over it / Fill the stage with my presence, lit with luminescence,” EMPRESS shows that you are always the beautiful ruler of your universe. YOU are the creator of your own success, and nobody should be able to tell you what to do, how to feel, or stop you from shining.

EMPRESS exclusively told CelebMix, “I decided to dance in my music video to visually bring this song to life and connect the two things I love most, dance and music. I think ballet is a perfect metaphor for the underlying message of the song which is about the struggle to find inner beauty in a superficial world.”

“Throughout my ballet career I always felt like I was striving for an unattainable perfection,” EMPRESS explained. “I finally found freedom both as an artist and a woman when I stopped comparing myself to others and started to appreciate who ‘I Am’ rather than who ‘I Am Not’.”

EMPRESS knows how to embrace an audience through dance and theatre, and that’s exactly what she did, but by adding her voice into the equation.

When I left home to go train with @sfballetschool when I was fourteen years old, my mother told me to always Dream Big. l For those of you who know me, you know that I dream BIG! The past few years I’ve been working hard to manifest this dream I’ve had since I was 7 years old, to be a singer. It all started by lip singing to the Spice Girls and Celine Dion and now it’s actually happening ?! Thank you to all of you who support me and love me and tell me I can do anything I set my mind to. I wrote Lovely I Am is my poetic response to people that get in your way of letting your dreams come true. I learned that no one has control over what we dream, and no one can manifest your dreams but you. We are all in this together to support each other to dream BIG. I am so grateful for each one of you who are always there to support me. Here’s to dreaming BIG together on this new journey…check out my debut single, Lovely I Am available everywhere ? . ? @suzyraskinphotography

When it came to the music video for “Lovely I Am,” EMPRESS made sure to mix her vocals and her dancing. She reunited some former San Francisco Ballet colleagues such as Luke Willis (director), Benjamin Freemantle (choreographer), and several other members of SFB. The steps in the music video range from breathtaking classical ballet techniques to modern dance, and it includes performances through the direction of colored light and shifting backdrops.

EMPRESS is the star on her own new stage, and we know you’ll love this electropop melody.

My name is Melanie Gomez (25) and I graduated with a BA in print journalism with music management as my minor. I loved music since I was a kid because it was always a way my family and I bonded, as well as a way to express myself on my own time as I got older. I’m not a singer and I don’t play an instrument, so my way of being part of the music industry is by getting to write about the music I love in various reviews and through my concert photography. Another goal? To make people smile.
