Newly minted L.A. resident and singer-songwriter Jenna Lotti is as sweet as can be with her latest dance-pop single “Honey”, premiering exclusively here on CelebMix.
Jenna first ventured into the world of songwriting through poetry. While her poems began as a creative outlet meant for self-medication, they gradually evolved into lyrics and songs with the encouragement of some close friends. After years of writing songs, learning guitar, and posting YouTube videos to hone her craft, her work began to pay off. She was nominated two years in a row for “Female Performer of the Year” by The New England Music Awards, and also garnered a nomination for “Pop Act of the Year” at the 2017 Boston Music Awards alongside the likes of JoJo and PVRIS. She also opened for Hunter Hayes and Barns Courtney.
Her poetic origins are definitely evident in the emotional maturity of her carefully crafted lyrics. In the words of PopMatters, she “paints a sonically crystalline world” with her music, and has established a distinguishable sound early on in her career. Driven mainly by pop, she also incorporates some tinges of blues and soul from her childhood musical influences.
“Honey” is a change of pace from her two singles released in 2017. “Warning Signs” is a mid-tempo jam contrasted by vulnerable lyrics reflecting on red flags in a previous relationship. “Beauty Queens” is a poetic and ethereal take on female beauty standards. Originally written on guitar with her husband Chris Facey, Jenna says “Honey” was initially “very bluesy and much slower.” When Jenna decided it didn’t sound quite right, she went back to square one and remade the song. With the help of her producer Josh Friedman, also known as That One Eyed Kid, “Honey” was “completely transformed”.
Now the track is unapologetically pop. It is perhaps the most sass we have seen from Jenna yet, especially with the empowering refrain “I’m gonna have to put this bluntly / I don’t want your need your honey”. Another standout is the subtle yet sensual line “I’ll be sweet to you / If you’ll be sweet to me.” The song still has Jenna’s signature emotional flair, with lyrics such as: “Heart’s telling me to try/ It’s just feeding me lies.”
Jenna is currently gearing up to release her self-titled EP, expected later in 2018. Much like her latest three singles, the EP will combine her emotional delivery with a widely appealing pop sound. As for the release of “Honey”, Jenna says she “couldn’t be more happy or excited about it”.
