Sophia Messa is one to watch, signed to Arista Records, she has just released her second single, offyourface. We caught up for a quick chat with her to talk about songwriting.
1) How did you getting signed to Arista happen?
I got signed to Arista because a friend of my manager sent CEO of Arista Records David Massey one of my songs and it interested him. He called me in for a meeting and offered me a deal the same day. It was pretty surreal.
2) Who are your musical influences?
Sia, Lady Gaga, Frank Ocean, Rihanna
3)How old were you when you first started songwriting?
I probably started songwriting around the fourth grade
4) The best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Everyone’s always going to have an opinion so trust yours!
5) Your songs are honest and really relatable, as they talk about subjects that everyone deals with or thinks about. is that something you try and do when writing or is it just you writing from your own experience?
I didn’t approach this one trying to make it relatable to everyone first. Overall, it really has to be true to whatever I am experiencing but I write many songs, so the ones that I choose to release maybe because I know my fans can relate to them.
6) You quit University just before you got signed, what gave you the push to think now is the time to do this?
I actually quit university the day I got signed so that gave me the push, hah!
7) What advice would you give for anyone wanting to start songwriting/singing?
Never judge your art. You’re always going to improve and everyone starts somewhere so if you are really passionate about songwriting, write about whatever is on your mind. You never know who you could end up connecting with.
8)You seem to be a very driven person, what’s your ultimate dream? (number 1 album, world tour etc?)
I want to do it all – tour the world, release many albums, the list goes on.
