We last caught up with UK country music duo Ward Thomas six months ago. During our exclusive interview the girls opened up about their upcoming tour, number 1 album ‘Cartwheels‘ and much more. Now, we catch up with Catherine and Lizzy following the wrap of their tour.
Here we talk exclusively to Ward Thomas about their upcoming festival dates, their last Cartwheels tour, and their upcoming third album.
You’ve recently wrapped up your second Cartwheels tour, what was it like performing in bigger venues this time?
It’s strange to think the tour’s already over! It was incredible seeing all those people come along to our show! And especially seeing them singing along to not only singles but album songs too! This is what we love about touring so much! Because it’s a fulfillment of all the work we put into creating the album! And the bigger venues enhanced that.
What’s your favourite song to perform live while on tour?
‘Carry You Home‘. This always has the best reception live. And it’s the song where we both feel the most excitement and energy both with the band and the audience.
During the tour you premiered two new songs; ‘Breathe In’, and ‘I Believe In You’, both were very well received. Will they be featured on your next album?
We are currently writing new songs the whole time. But yes we hope to include those on our next album. And played them live to see what reaction we’d get to our new material.
‘Breathe In’ seems to be about your relationship as twins, but what was the main inspiration behind ‘I Believe In You’?
‘Breath In’ is about a lot of things. It’s inspired by older couples or even a mother bond with her baby that have a kind of love that can be swung but unbroken. ‘I Believe In You’, is a little like our song ‘Carry You Home’. It’s an encouraging song based on our close friends and family and each other.
Both tracks show different sides to your musical style, so can we expect a mixture of genre’s on your third LP?
We like to write songs without a genre specification. We always go into a session with the idea of writing a piece of music naturally, then go into the studio and let each song speak for itself production wise. So yes it’ll probably be a bit of a variation like this album ‘Cartwheels’.
Do you have any collaborations planned for your next album?
Fingers crossed. However, we’re still in the planning period for a third album.
When in 2018 can fans expect your new record?
We don’t know that yet. But we will probably start the recording process in the winter.
You have released five singles off your record breaking ‘Cartwheels’ LP so far, do you plan to release any more?
Maybe :)
Do you have any plans to record more Snug Sessions soon?
We love doing our snug sessions. However, we are concentrating on songwriting and summer festivals for the time being.
Speaking of festivals, you have a super busy summer ahead with many major festival slots lined-up. Which event are you most excited about?
Well of course we can’t wait for Glastonbury next weekend! But the both of us are most excited about BST Hyde Park. As Stevie Nicks will be playing and Fleetwood Mac are our favorite band. We also can’t wait to see Tom Petty! It will be a real treat being there. We hope Stevie and Tom will perform ‘Stop Dragging My Heart Around’.
This July will also see you perform in Germany for the first time. How excited are you about performing for your German fans?
We can’t wait to take the next step into our career of spreading our music into more countries around Europe. It’ll be interesting to see how people react to our music in Germany.
You will also be supporting US country singer Miranda Lambert in August, how did that come about?
That was a very exciting surprise! We pitched for it and got accepted.
Are you hoping you might get the chance to write and or record with Miranda while on tour with her?
We can’t wait to be performing on the same stage as her in the first place. The idea of collaborating with her would be amazing in our wildest dreams.
Do you have any plans to open for any US acts in America soon?
We do not currently. We haven’t thought about America yet.
Will you be hitting the road next year in support of your next record?
We haven’t thought that far yet. We are very focused on creating our next project.
