Ed Sheeran is a British singer-songwriter, recognised globally for his amazing talents. His two albums thus far, + (Plus) and X (Multiply) have been hugely successful, with Ed winning his first three Grammy awards this year for the song ‘Thinking Out Loud’.
Despite his record-breaking success, Ed has always remained true to himself and this is something that fans continue to admire. He’s proof that you can be talented, successful and humble and you shouldn’t change yourself for anybody. As his lyric goes, “Be a true heart not a follower”.
Of course, the music is an important part of why fans love Ed Sheeran. His lyrics and his incredible live performances resonate with fans again and again. Fans lucky enough to have met Ed know that he takes the time to appreciate every single fan, and it makes the relationship between the artist and his fanbase even more special.
CelebMix took the time to speak to Ed Sheeran fans from across the globe about why they love him so much. This is what they had to say.
Megan, 14, UK – “I love Ed Sheeran because he is remarkably humble and an amazing lyricist. Aside from the fact he remained grounded throughout his fame journey, he connected with the people he met along the way. Some artists these days feel almost untouchable and distant from their fans, yet he made such a personal connection with his fans through his words, through his lyrics. Not many musicians can say they can play instruments these days, they can’t say they write their own music either, but he can. And each lyric always feels particular to me – even it was written from his own experiences. Quite frankly, the better question is how can I not love Ed Sheeran?”
Elizabeth, 20, USA – Ed is my reminder of the time when I was completely broken and hopeless. Although, I’ve moved on and I am better, he keeps me grounded and reminds me to never go back. He reminds me to live and love. He reminds me to be happy and appreciate myself. He reminds me that I deserve every single bit of space I take up in this universe. He reminds me that I will never be too broken for anyone or anything and that is something so magical that I will cherish forever. And although I’ve never met him, I feel like I could just ramble to him and he would be so neutral – as neutral as one can be with a stranger, lol. He’s one of the reasons I’m okay now and I’m so grateful for him and his music :).
Marina, 16, France – I discovered Ed by chance by losing myself on the internet. That’s funny how someone I didn’t know or care about before became my life. But I think I didn’t just fall in love with the singer. I fell in love with the fandom. That’s like my family. We have our world.
Nathalie, 24, Belgium – I love Ed because he’s so down to earth and he knows how to treat his fans. He used to be like us, looking up to his idol, that’s why he does free Meet & Greets too. You can only win them, not buy them for ridiculous prices. I love how he’s still himself, even though the media are constantly watching everything he does, he just doesn’t care, and says what he wants. Not only is his personality is amazing, but also his songs, his lyrics. I have never met him, but I got a tattoo of a ‘Photograph’ lyric in his handwriting, “you won’t ever be alone”. I asked someone who had a Meet & Greet to ask him & he wrote it down for me. That lyric means the world to me, Ed has helped me through some difficult times.
Rebecca, 17, England – Hidden behind the music is such a genuine and lovely soul. As much as I love Ed’s music, I have grown to love and admire him so much more as a person. His determination is so admirable that I find it so inspiring. He is the reason he is where he is today, through his sheer work ethic and love for his job. He inspires me so much to be a better person and to work hard in order to be where I want to be. Not only that, but his gratitude and love for his fans and the people around him amazes me. He never seems to forget the people that helped him along his way; the support acts, the technicians, everyone. He is just such a lovely and warm person who generates nothing but positive and loving vibes.
Viviana, 19, Germany – I started listening to Ed when I was about 14 years old and went through a really tough time at school with lots of bullying and unnecessary drama. I got lost in music during that time and you remember when people fell in love with Elvis or Tina Turner or The Backstreet Boys because they were such talented inspiring artists? Yeah, that was me when I fell in love with Ed Sheeran. He’s such a special, unique artist and the fact that he’s still so down to earth and laid back and unbelievably humble and kind is still so inspiring to me. Seeing him grow as an artist and as a person (which is always risky to say but you do get to know your favourite musicians, at least a bit when you listen to them for such a long time) for 5 years has been such a blessing and being able to call someone like him my idol is amazing. I love that his lyrics are some of the most honest and real lyrics I’ve ever heard in my life and him being not only an amazing singer/rapper on record but also live is something I’m so grateful for. I honestly owe a lot to him and his music, he helped ME grow too and I’ve been growing up listening to his music and will always get back to it. When I met him back in 2014 I had the opportunity to thank him for everything he’s done and still doing for so many people and he was so nice and understanding and I hope everyone has an idol like him in their life.
Skyler, 16, USA – I fell in love with Ed as soon as I heard his music but it wasn’t until I went to one of his concerts that I was truly blown away. My dad and I sat back in astonishment. Ed is so talented and has something truly special. After that I became a super fan and my dad took me to two more of his concerts. I love the way my dad and I were able to bond over his music and I love the way Ed’s music allows me to enter a world of my own.
Jess, 31, USA – He is basically the embodiment of everything I love about music. He puts his heart and soul into his songs, and you can hear it- more importantly, you can feel it. It’s heart wrenching, it’s soothing, sometimes it hits a little too close to home… it’s honest. He also doesn’t try to be anything other than himself which is unbelievably refreshing. For me also, it’s the pure energy he puts into his live music. So much intensity and power, and it’s just him and his guitar and loop pedal! The thing is, playing and writing music used to be something I did all the time and was very important to me. But because of life and various factors, I had gotten away from it for so long. Watching and listening to him play made me remember how much I used to love it, and basically led to me picking up my guitar for the first time in 10 years. It’s a struggle to reclaim something I’ve lost for so long but his music reminds me why it was so important in the first place.
Jackie, 38, USA – It’s hard to give just one reason why I love Ed Sheeran because there are so many. I love his music because it helps me deal with chronic pain. I use his music as distraction therapy from pain due to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Because of his music I am able to take less medicine. Less medicine means I get to live longer so it is no exaggeration to say, to me, his music is life saving. Pain also brings on depression and I wasn’t always the happiest person before I found his music. His music can brighten my mood on my darkest days. I have even used his music during medical procedures to help me get through the experience. I love how charitable Ed is and generous with his time to help others. For 4 years Ed has helped support awareness of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Back in 2012 I gave Ed some awareness wristbands along with some info on EDS and a letter explaining what it is like to live with the syndrome. To this day I don’t know why he chose to help but I am forever grateful.
