On 23 March 2018, brand new dance music documentary film, “What We Started”, was released around the world digitally. It first premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival on 15 June 2017 and was later shown at Miami Music Week the day before the official release on 22 March 2018. Upon the first few minutes of watching, we knew we were going to be in for quite the ride, quite the trip, and quite the journey. Dance music has evolved so much and this documentary completely wraps it up into a neat package that we couldn’t wait to open and explore.
The film’s music supervisor & executive producer was Pete Tong; and. it was directed by Bert Marcus & Cyrus Saidi. It’s certainly interesting and takes us back in time to when dance music was underground instead of mainstream. It covers every basis possible, all the while keeping us involved, included, and engaged.

The main storyline sticks to Martin Garrix as he has been chosen to perform at Ultra Music Festival, becoming the youngest DJ to perform there. We also see him create music with Usher – which led to the track “Don’t Look Down”. We also have extensive talks with Carl Cox as he retires from his Ibiza residency.
The film is sectioned which really allows the extensive clips to be paired together, allowing a contexted journey through this film. We learn so much in this documentary, from where dance music originated from as disco died down, to how a song is created. There are various interviews with the likes of Tiësto, Afrojack, Steve Angello, Erick Morillo, Moby, Paul Oakenfold, Ed Sheeran, and David Guetta.
We also hear from Tiësto about the time he performed at the Olympics. They all manage to site David Guetta as the DJ who turned what used to be underground into chart mainstream. This documentary has it all and has managed to bring up so much information and truly has shown dance music and EDM in the perfect light. Bringing up its history and where it is today. Showing how DJs have gone from mixing records there and then on turntables, to mixing on a computer and saving to a USB which is then played at a gig, concert, or festival.

The film brings up a lot of debate, with the inclusion of other famous DJs’ tweets and quotes. “What We Started” has got it all, and we simply loved this movie.
