OH MY CHRIST! It’s official – beloved British sitcom Gavin and Stacey will be returning for one final episode this Christmas.
A report from Deadline first teased the news back in February, with the cast denying any truth to the rumours. However, this morning James Corden shared a photo of him and co-creator Ruth Jones with a copy of the script, making the news official and delighting thousands of fans across the country.
In his post, he stated: “Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James.”
The final episode of Gavin and Stacey comes after the last Christmas special which aired in 2019. The episode ended on an almighty cliffhanger, with Ruth’s character Nessa proposing to Smithy (played by James). The moment won a BAFTA in 2020 for the Must-See Moment, as voted for by the public.
Gavin and Stacey first aired in 2007 and follows the story of Essex boy Gavin and Welsh girl Stacey who fall in love, uniting both families along the way. The show is a cult classic and ran for three series, with two Christmas specials. Fans will be hoping to find out whether or not Nessa and Smithy get married, as well as the fate of the Shipman and West families.
Joanna Page, who plays Stacey, addressed the exciting news on her podcast Off The Telly, which she hosts with Natalie Cassidy. “I can’t believe that we can finally talk about it and I don’t have to keep it to myself,” she said.
“I’m so excited to see the gang again and start filming. I can’t wait to find out if Smithy has said yes. I can’t wait to find out what’s happening to everybody!”
While we patiently wait for more news on the finale, you can rewatch (or get familiar with) Gavin and Stacey on BBC iPlayer.
