Ever since we found out a new Mamma Mia! movie was in the works, we’ve been counting down the days until its July 20, 2018 release.

However, our excitement levels are at an all time high today as the first official trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has been released. Directed by Ol Parker, the trailer promises plenty of drama, laughs and even more of your favourite ABBA songs ten years after the original movie.

The trailer reintroduces us to Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), who reveals that she is pregnant. In order to help her overcome her nerves, family friends Rosie and Tanya (Julie Walters and Christine Baranski) fill her in on the early years of her mum Donna (Meryl Streep).

Switching between the past and the present, we then get to find out a little more about young Donna (Lily James) and her early life. This includes her history with Harry (Colin Firth), Sam (Pierce Brosnan) and Bill (Stellan Skarsgård), whose younger versions will be played by Hugh Skinner, Jeremy Irvine and Josh Dylan respectively.

One of the most exciting elements of the trailer is the cameo from Cher, who plays Sophie’s grandmother. The movie will also star Dominic Cooper as Sky, Alexa Davies as Young Rosie and Jessica Keenan Wynn as Young Tanya.

However, many fans have been speculating over Meryl Streep’s lack of involvement as Donna. During the trailer, her character only appears during the flashbacks. Present day Rosie also tells Sophie that “your mother was the bravest person we ever met”, which implies that perhaps Donna has passed away. With seven months to go until the movie’s release, we’ve got a long wait to find out.

In terms of music, ‘I Have A Dream’, ‘Dancing Queen’ and ‘Mamma Mia’ were all featured in the trailer. The original Mamma Mia! movie was bursting with iconic ABBA songs, and we can’t wait to find out what other tracks will make the cut this time around.

Check out the trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again below.

The original Mamma Mia! movie grossed over $600 million worldwide, so the sequel/prequel has a lot to live up to. However, from the first trailer alone, it’s looking promising that Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will be another success.
