Having released European tour dates on Wednesday, it’s already been a big week for Jacob Whitesides. However it’s just gotten much bigger, with the release of his debut album ‘Why?’.
The 18 year old musician has been on people’s radars for years, but he’s bound to gain a large fanbase from this album itself. His fans have already taken to Twitter to share their support with everyone, some fans even going as far as to gift the album to other fans and potential fans. There are 13 tracks on the album including singles ‘Focus’, ‘Lovesick’ and ‘Open Book’.
While every song on the album is worth a listen (or 50), after listening to the album multiple times throughout, we’ve come up with a list of our top five. Here are our five favourites from ‘Why?’:
5. She Ain’t Got A Thing
‘She Ain’t Got A Thing’ puts a twist on your normal pop love song, with its strong country vibe supporting Jacob’s lyrics. The song has well written lyrics combined with a catchy country background. While it won’t be everyone’s taste, it has made our top five.
4. You Told Me So
Returning to his acoustic roots in this song, ‘You Told Me So’ is perhaps the finest example of the talent that Jacob possesses. It’s a raw, emotional song in which Jacob’s voice shines in the most positive way. ‘You Told Me So’ is in the running for the best written song on ‘Why?’
3. Levitate
‘Levitate’ has a smooth jazz vibe to its music and while it’s one of the slower songs on the album, it is one of the catchiest. It’s a song about a girl deserving more than her boyfriend is giving her and it’s executed beautifully. A song that is well beyond Jacob’s years and highlights his song writing skills in a major way.
2. Bury Our Love
Sophisticated and smooth sounding, ‘Bury Our Love’ is the rawest song on the album. The lyrics are dark, and has a ‘Grenade’ by Bruno Mars vibe to it. It’s a sound that we haven’t heard from Jacob before and he combines a country sound with the type of modern pop that our generation loves today. ‘Bury Our Love’ will perhaps be one of Jacob’s most spoken about songs in years to come.
1. Lovesick
‘Lovesick’ was the second single on ‘Why?’ and is by far the catchiest song on the album. It’s a feel good, dance worthy song and is our favourite from ‘Why?’. The music is upbeat, makes you want to clap along and Jacob’s voice is once again phenomenal. If you’re feeling down, ‘Lovesick’ is the perfect pick me up and well worth listening to.
All in all, ‘Why?’ is one of the best albums dropped in 2016 so far and will take Jacob to amazing places. We can’t wait to hear these songs performed live over the next few months.
