Legendary singer and former Wham! band member George Michael passed away on Sunday. He was 53.
Michael passed away on Christmas Eve. Ironically and sadly, Wham!’s “Last Christmas” is one of the most iconic singles we have got for the eve.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, the singer’s representative said,
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage”.
George Michael started his musical career with his friend Andrew Ridgeley as they both formed a band named Wham! that went on to become one of the most successful bands of the 20th century. George Michael sold millions of albums worldwide both as a part of the band and as a solo artist. His death is a great loss to the music industry.
Celebrities and fans took to various social media channels to pay their tributes to the late singer. Elton John paid his tribute to the late singer and said,
I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend – the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist.
James Corden and Louis Tomilson were amongst the many celebrities who expressed their grief over the singer’s death. While Louis Tomlinson wrote “RIP George Michael. A King”, James Corden tweeted a really sweet message or say, the parting words for late Michael:
I've loved George Michael for as long as I can remember. He was an absolute inspiration. Always ahead of his time.
