Radio 1 DJ Greg James has this afternoon finally completed his Gregathlon challenge. This has raised over £774,000 for Sport Relief! Greg successfully finished 5 triathlons in 5 days, travelling across the UK to push himself to his physical and mental limit. As we reported earlier this week, Greg kicked off the challenge on Monday in Belfast and then travelled to Cardiff, Glasgow and Sheffield before the concluding event today in Norwich. After each triathlon was complete, he then took part in his afternoon radio show in the BBC studio of each city.
The week was certainly not plain sailing for Greg, as he faced freezing temperatures and raging winds triggered by Storm Imogen. As a result, part of his cycling trail was re-routed and the journeys between the cities were much harder. He also faced extreme difficulties on Wednesday after the swim, as he struggled to leave the water and his legs seemed to collapse underneath him. The cycle on Thursday saw similar issues, with Greg falling off his bike at one point as his legs had seized up so severely.
This afternoon though Greg was all smiles as he raised his arms in victory crossing the finish line. Speaking straight after the final run this afternoon, he thanked everyone for the constant support and donations. He also responded to a statement that this week he had ‘changed lives’ by noting that he himself had ‘just done some cycling’. Being his usual modest self, Greg said that it was the general public who had worked together to support Sport Relief and change the lives of those suffering across the world.
Greg was joined by a number of special guests throughout the Gregathlon, including rapper Example and fellow radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw. Huge crowds gathered to cheer Greg on for his final run in Norwich today, made all the more special since Norwich was Greg’s university town. He crossed the finish line to huge celebrations and the emotions were clear in his voice as he spoke to Radio 1.
Massive congratulations to Greg James on this incredible achievement! Think you could ever do something like this? Did you get involved in supporting Greg and donating? Head over to @CelebMix or let us know in the comments below!
