Hairspray blew us all away in 2007 with Tracy Turnblad singing her heart out and dancing like nobody’s watching. Well, Nikki Blonsky, who played the lead role, has now made a huge announcement: she’s gay.
As Pride month came to an end, Blonsky shared her announcement in a TikTok video lip-syncing to Diana Ross’ ‘I’m Coming Out’ in her back garden. The song is a widely-known Pride anthem, so Blonsky didn’t have to say anything for fans to understand what she meant by the video.
Following her big announcement, Blonsky spoke to the Hollywood Reporter to talk about the positive response to her video. She said she was happy to see her Hairspray family being so supportive.
“I was most nervous about my Hairspray family, I think. Hearing from Adam and from Brittany and people who I think so incredibly highly of, it means more than they will ever know. I was so nervous because I didn’t want them to think I was keeping something from them. I wasn’t ready at the time to put it all out there,” Blonsky explained.
In that same interview, Blonksy revealed the first person she told was her on-screen mother Edna from Hairspray, who was played John Travolta. “I did not want the person who played my mother to have to find out about this from anybody else,” Blonsky said.
It’s nice to see that after all this time, Blonsky is still so close with her Hairspray family.
