Halsey has achieved her first No. 1 album in the US making her the first female artist to top the Billboard 200 in 2017.
‘Hopeless Fountain Kingdom’, Halsey’s second studio album, sold 106,000 total copies in its first week of release.
The album which features the single ‘Now or Never’ follows 2015’s ‘Badlands’ which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
Critics and fans have all been very vocal in their appreciation of the album, with many describing this as being Halsey’s most confident and cohesive work to date.
Rob Sheffield from Rolling Stone said the album was “bold” and that Halsey shows off all her “wild musical ambitions”.
“It’s her sprawling science-fiction breakup tale, indulging her taste for wide-screen melodrama.” Sheffield said, adding that he felt the ‘Colors’ singer had adopted more of a “adult dystopian synth-pop” sound.
Taking to Instagram to share the news of the albums chart success, Halsey wrote “ITS OFFICIAL! 1st female album to go #1 on @billboard this year!!!! I can’t believe this!”
“I executive produced this album and wrote every single word of it! I remember when I was just stoked to have cool blogs writing about me. I remember spending hours sending my demos to every blog on hypemachine begging them to feature me.”
“I remember sitting down to write this album in one of the lowest points of my life and crying when the words wouldn’t come. I have never been happier in my entire life and I can’t stop smiling.”
“I will never be able to express my gratitude and everyday I wake up and revel in how awe inspiring this is. Thank you guys for believing in me and making me feel like I’m not alone.”
