Red carpet fashion: we all know what to expect, right? A diverse and beautiful collection of outfits from the girls. Boring, bland, monochrome suits from the boys. It is a rare occasion when a male fashion choice stands out on the red carpet, probably because they’re all so similar. That is usually the case – but not at the 2016 Brits.
The male celebs attending the Brits suddenly seemed a bit more open to experimenting with fashion, and it was long overdue. It was only a few weeks ago that male musicians were being criticised for their predictable black-and-white suit combos. All of a sudden, there are bright colours, floral patterns and funky designs galore.
So where did this come from? Now, we’re not saying that Harry Styles has single-handedly changed the men’s fashion industry or anything, but we’re definitely feeling some Harry-vibes on the Brits red carpet.

All that controversy over Harry’s Gucci AMAs suit may have actually inspired other male celebs to take more risks with their fashion statements.
Although social-media reaction to Harry’s AMAs look was populated by cynics (IKEA bedspread, anyone?) he was also praised for being a lone risk-taker in men’s fashion. It seems others are up for being more daring too.
Mark Ronson, Nick Grimshaw, Louis Tomlinson and Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander all moved away from the standard black suit jacket. Louis and Nick both added simple metallic twists to their suits, whilst Olly went for head-to-toe floral.
Obvious or subtle, these slight changes in men’s fashion represent changes in how they choose to express themselves. They are less confined by gender boundaries and ideas of what is “acceptable” to wear, and they are setting an example for young fans.
In the long-run, this is a huge step forward. And it seems to have been kick-started by Harry Styles – someone who has been testing fashion boundaries for some time now.
