Following the incredible success of her track “Girls Like Girls,” Hayley Kiyoko has released a new song, “Gravel To Tempo.” Another empowering song, Kiyoko sings about feeling imperfect, but that she will still always do things “[her] way.”
In addition to the new song, Hayley Kiyoko also debuted a music video to go along with the track:
In the video, Kiyoko portrays a high school student who doesn’t quite fit in. Some popular girls seem to be judging her, and Kiyoko, not caring what they think, proceeds to dance in front of them, proving that she really doesn’t care at all what they, or anyone else, think of her.
In an interview with Refinery 29, Kiyoko discusses the inspiration behind the video. Remembering the girls she “had crushes on in high school,” Kiyoko understood that in the end, their approval didn’t matter. She said that “I grew up, and I realized: The only validation I need is from myself.”
