Did you hear the angels singing when you woke up this morning, suddenly feel like your heart was broken and somehow healed all in the same breath? That feeling is because Adele has come out with her new single – and music video to match – and it is absolutely heavenly.
Hello, it’s me
I was wondering if after all these years
You’d like to meet, to go over everything
They say that time’s supposed to heal ya
But I ain’t done much healing
Hello, can you hear me?
I’m in California dreaming about who we used to be
When we were younger and free
I’ve forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet
There’s such a difference between us
And a million miles
Hello from the other side
I must’ve called a thousand times to tell you
I’m sorry, for everything that I’ve done
But when I call you never seem to be home
Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I’ve tried to tell you
I’m sorry, for breaking your heart
But it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore
Hello, how are you?
It’s so typical of me to talk about myself
I’m sorry, I hope that you’re well
Did you ever make it out of that town
Where nothing ever happened?
It’s no secret
That the both of us are running out of time
Hello from the other side
I must’ve called a thousand times to tell you
I’m sorry, for everything that I’ve done
But when I call you never seem to be home
Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I’ve tried to tell you
I’m sorry, for breaking your heart
But it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore
Ooooohh, anymore
Ooooohh, anymore
Ooooohh, anymore
Anymore
Hello from the other side
I must’ve called a thousand times to tell you
I’m sorry, for everything that I’ve done
But when I call you never seem to be home
Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I’ve tried to tell you
I’m sorry, for breaking your heart
But it don’t matter, it clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore
This song is perfectly crafted to take you on an emotional journey from beginning to end and the video to accompany it could not have been produced any better.
The video begins with Adele trying to complete a call before walking into a house that looks plagued with memories and untouched for some time. She begins to shake sheets off of furniture and open windows as dust settles and light begins to shine in.
We are then greeted by her beautiful voice as the video progresses to her starting a tea kettle and with it her memories start to pour in. The song is about longing; she’s leaving a message to someone who was very important to her heart – asking if they’d like to meet, to talk about what went wrong.
“They say that time’s supposed to heal ya but I aint done much healing”
The memories are happy at first; you see love, light, and laughter. Soon after the lyrics become a little heavier, Adele’s voice gets filled with more emotion, and the break down occurs – to the couple in the video and within your heart as you watch.
“Hello from the outside, at least I can say that I’ve tried to tell you I’m sorry for breaking your heart but it don’t matter it clearly doesn’t tear you apart anymore.”
The love of her life walks away in this scene, and the rest of the song is hard to listen to. You can hear the emptiness in her voice as she replays it all in her mind and realizes that she was wrong, claiming to talk about herself too much. She wishes him well and asks if he ever got out of that town, mentions how they’re running out of time.
Set between the inside of a home they shared together and the outside – the entire structure of the video is beautiful, it’s not over done and it’s not corny about missing someone. It’s an honest look into what loneliness is when all you’ve got left are the memories of what everything felt like when you were happy.
It is a look into a spot in your life where you want to be settled and you’re just looking for the one missing piece to complete your puzzle and then it hits you – the piece you’re missing is the one you broke.
The lyrics to the song couldn’t have been given to a more perfect voice to sing them and Adele couldn’t have picked a better single for her return to music.
If this is just a preview of what’s in store for us when her entire album hits – we are stocking up on tissues, Ben and Jerrys, and tea to cry over as we listen to it song by song.
