Here at CelebMix, we love a good hit single. However, some singles never achieve the success they truly deserved. Therefore, we present to you our latest weekly feature – ‘Hidden Hits’. Within this feature, we will discuss a ‘hidden hit’, discuss the success it achieved, the success it should’ve achieved and why it should’ve achieved that success.
Makes sense? Let’s get started:
In case you couldn’t tell by now, the first ‘Hidden Hit’ we will be discussing is Mura Masa & Charli XCX’s 2017 single, ‘1 Night’.
Prior to the release of ‘1 Night’, fans were in awe of the collaboration; with some fans even claiming it was going to be the hit of the century. However, this was not the case. The general public once again let us down by not getting into this tropical hit.
The single had everything it needed for success: electric production, an infectious hook and Charli XCX of course!
We covered this single back when its accompanying music video dropped, and we were excited to see Mura Masa & Charli XCX receive moderate commercial success, rather than just their usual critical acclaim. ‘1 Night’ also served as the lead single for Mura Masa’s self-titled debut album, yet the single didn’t even manage to chart anywhere besides the Billboard US Dance Chart, peaking at number thirty-one.
Although, we weren’t expecting this single to achieve a ‘Despacito’ level of success, we believe ‘1 Night’ should’ve been that summer single. You know, the one which receives constant airplay on radio stations such as Capital FM and BBC Radio 1. Also, it should’ve peaked within the top 10 of every country it charted in eventually. I don’t know about you but we are still holding our breath hoping that will happen!
The question you may be asking now is, ‘Well, why do you think that?’
Well, Mura Masa was following up from previous successful breakthrough singles, ‘What If I Go?’ and ‘Love$ick’, which features A$AP Rocky. Although, it may have seemed hard for Mura Masa to outdo himself following these impressive singles, we sure thought he hit the nail on the head with ‘1 Night’.
We could conclude that ‘1 Night’ didn’t mix well with the general public and mainstream attention, leading the single to become a ‘Hidden Hit’. However, we are putting this down to not enough promotion from the label. This is quite the frequent case within the music industry when it comes to a single not achieving the success it honestly deserves.
There’s so many examples we could demonstrate to you right now, but those examples are for a another article at a different week. We hope you enjoy this new feature and hope to see you again next week when we cover yet another ‘Hidden Hit’.
