Austin, Texas-based funk and soul outfit Honey Made introduces their electrifying new EP, Charge It to the Band Fund, an ode to resilience, self-discovery, and the unapologetic pursuit of musical authenticity.
The title of the new record – Charge It to the Band Fund pays homage to the gritty, unyielding spirit of the ‘90s and ‘00s southern hip-hop era. It is also reflective of the tumultuous world of the music industry.
Honey Made explains, “All musicians know that during your journey in this industry, everything doesn’t always go as planned. You get Ws, but you damn sure are gonna catch plenty of Ls. Don’t let that stop you. Charge those hits to the game and keep rolling. Get stronger. Keep kicking ass.”
Made up of seven tracks, Charge It to the Band Fund starts off with the funky, bouncy “Get On Up,” traveling on a deliciously contagious rhythm topped by energizing vocals replete with layered harmonies. A soft, shimmering breakdown, followed by braying bass, leads to a vibrant solo.
Highlights include “Vibin’,” blending hints of soul, funk, and disco into a swanky melody brimming with lush falsetto vocals and bright brass accents. A personal favorite “Upstairs (Radio Edit)” is wrapped in soul and surf rock flavors and plush, evocative vocals dripping with effervescence.
The thick, majestic intro to “Ashy Pockets (My Mode)” flows into a luscious blend of G-Funk and metal influences. A fat bassline and tight percussion give the rhythm a potent mid-tempo cadence as gang-like vocal harmonies infuse the tune with outstanding, radiant surfaces.
An impromptu jam created “Dfa,” the closing track, which is a tribute to trombonist Donald McDaniel. Drenched in beaucoup funk energy, this song vibrates with pure, magnetic appeal.
The band says, “This song is dedicated to the hardest working man in the biz. We felt he was so gangsta that he needed his own theme song. Dbone Funk Amazing.”
With Charge It to the Band Fund, Honey Made offers up bravura soul and granular funk, revealing the band’s mastery of groove.
