This Friday marked the return of a force to be reckoned with. Australian rapper Iggy Azalea finally made her way back to the spotlight with a brand new song and she is definitely here to stay.
Her new track is a trop-pop banger with the fitting title “Savior” and features Migos member Quavo on the chorus. It details Iggy’s personal struggles in the industry over the last couple of years and how she tried to overcome them.
“Savior” therefore marks a sort-of comeback for the rapper, as it is the first one released under her new label “Island”. It follows her long struggle with “Def Jam”, and the subsequent fall-out and cancellation of her album “Digital Distortion”. You might as well call “Savior” her personal fight song.
To open this new chapter in her career and life, Iggy presents us with probably her radio-friendliest track to date. Stylistically, “Savior” is a laid-back track with heavy tropical house and pop influences. The very catchy hook is sung by Quavo who repeats “I’ve been looking for a savior” in his typical autotuned manner. Lyrically, the song details Iggy’s struggle to find the strength within herself, to not be dependent on another savior than herself.
According to a tweet, sent by Iggy following the release, “Savior” was written during the rough patches she faced over the last couple of years. She released it in order to spread the message that one can find his or her own happiness within. This uplifting message is definitely perfectly portrayed by the catchy beats and the powerful lyrics. Production for the song was handled by Cirkut, who is also responsible for creating smash hits like “Wrecking Ball” or “Timber”, as well as a new producer called MHL.
Following the release, recent collaborators of Iggy, like Demi Lovato, took to Twitter to show their support for her new track.
