Singer-songwriter Brookelyn Rose unveils her new single/music video, “Sour Candy,” a track lifted from her forthcoming EP.
Talking about the song, Brookelyn shares, “‘Sour Candy’ is a seductive, empowering, and upbeat song that dives into the duality of feminine power. ‘I’m soft, like the belly of the beast,’ was the first line I wrote, and I think it captures the overall theme of this song; Underneath the sweet, soft mask women wear to make it in this world, we’re ferocious underneath it all.”
Originally from Philly, Brookelyn has performed across the country. Pulling from her own experiences, her sound merges elements of pop and rock, along with country flavors, into delicious music, at once fun and authentic.
CelebMix spoke with Brookelyn Rose to discover how she got started in music, more about her upcoming EP, and her recording process.
What three things can’t you live without?
- Floss sticks
- My dogs
- Aquaphor
What inspired your new single/music video, “Sour Candy?”
Being a woman, specifically, a woman in the music industry, was my inspiration for this song. The first line I wrote, which happens to be the first line of the song is, ‘I’m soft like the belly of the beast,’ and it embodies my experience as a woman in the music industry. Some guys see me and think they can walk all over me because I’m sweet and energetic, but I’m also a fierce artist who knows who she is and what she’s capable of. This is a song that fuels my confidence and reminds me that I’m in control of my career, my body, and my sexuality.
Who directed the video and where was it shot?
Wayne Williams directed this visualizer, and it was shot at Nelson Ghost Town in Las Vegas.
You have a new EP arriving soon. What can you share about it?
This EP is my debut into the world of country music. Each of the five songs on this EP is different and unique. From upbeat dance tracks to moving ballads, I’m hoping that people will connect with these songs no matter what mood they’re in!
How did you get started in music? What’s the backstory there?
Music has always played an important role in my life and I knew it was what I wanted to do as a career since I was 6 years old. Singing and songwriting are how I release my emotions and figure out what’s going on inside myself when I have trouble vocalizing it. I started off, like most of us do, performing pop songs for my family in the living room while holding a toy microphone. Then in high school, I started pursuing musical theater, until I began performing my own songs across the east coast. After college, I moved out to LA and continued writing, recording, and performing original songs with some of the most talented, genuine musicians that I’ve been lucky enough to call friends. I like to be surrounded by artists who are striving for greatness, it inspires me and pushes me to be the best that I can possibly be.
Where are you from?
I’m originally from a suburb right outside of Philadelphia.
Did your hometown impact your sound?
I’m not sure if it impacted my sound, but it definitely helped me find my voice.
Are there any recording techniques you like to use in the studio?
I don’t think this counts as a technique, but it’s important: I come in as prepared as I possibly can be. This way, time isn’t being wasted on things that could’ve been done outside the studio. I also work very closely with whoever is producing my songs, so we can build trust in each other and find the exact sound that gets us excited. Trusting the skills and talent of the people I surround myself with is super important to me.
How do you keep your sound consistent on stage?
A lot of practice, vocal warmups, and rest.
Which artists in your opinion are killing it right now?
Morgan Wade, Rina Sawayama, Annabel Lee, and Brittney Spencer.
What’s your definition of success?
Headlining tours and having people feel connected and seen through my music.
What can your fans expect over the next six months? New material? Live gigs?
They can expect five new songs with accompanying visuals. I’ll be booking shows across the East Coast, Nashville, and Midwest! I’ll be sure to keep everyone up to date with live shows on my socials!
